Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a surgical method to increase the size and improve the shape of the breasts.
The surgery can be performed using silicone implants.
How do we do Breast Augmentation?
Patients can typically have a Breast Augmentation performed and go home the same day, with an occasional requirement for an overnight stay.
Patients are can have a procedure under local anaesthetic and sedation or are put to sleep with a general anaesthetic.
The incision used is under the surface of the breast. This allows the surgeon to place the implant in the right place (under the breast OR partly under the breast and muscle OR under the muscle only).
For minimal scarring, the incision is closed in a straight line with dissolving stitches and a waterproof dressing.
What kind of patients would benefit from Breast Augmentation?
Whether it’s due to pregnancy, weight loss, asymmetry or ageing many women are looking at ways to improve their confidence and the shape and size of their breasts.
Some women feel self-conscious that they inadequately fill out their clothes, including dresses that they want to wear or the cleavage lines are not as full as they would like it to be.
This can be as a result of the body type (Skinny) or genetics (Female part of the family have smaller breasts).
What do we do before Breast Augmentation?
When clients come into the clinic, our UK trained plastic surgeon with expert knowledge makes a full assessment.
The surgeon establishes reasons sought for surgery and what the client hopes to achieve as an end result.
Activity levels and the amount of fat available is also found in order to establish if the augmentation would have to take place with a silicone implant or the results can be optimised additionally with body fat or by using fat alone.
Breast Augmentation using body fat alone takes place over a number of sessions as some of the fat gets reabsorbed by the body.
A thorough assessment will be done with respect to activity levels, for example, working out or rock climbing.
The level of body fat will be assessed as this will help the plastic surgeon determine where the implants have to be placed and the impact of doing so (see diagram below).
Measurements are taken to provide a more scientific approach to planning and surgery.
It is important for the patient to try out sizes that would provide a realistic outcome, which includes the use of sizers, to simulate the effect of breast augmentation.
We give our patients time to make a considered decision and only once both the patient and surgeons are happy to do we proceed.
What do patients see after Breast Augmentation?
Patients are put in a support bra right after surgery to help support the change. As soon as they are comfortable, patients will be able to notice the change in size.
There will be some swelling but there should not be any pain.
Once ready, patients can go home with pre-booked follow up appointments.
What are the alternatives to Breast Augmentation ?
Clients may choose an alternative to surgery such as wearing push-up bras or fitted clothing to emphasise the natural shape.
However, in some cases, people can feel this is enough when wearing clothes normally, but not enough in certain circumstances such as beachwear.
