Under a local anaesthetic, patients have an incision near the swelling to safely remove it.
The entire process from consultation to discharge typically happens on the same day, in one continuous 2 hour period.
The swelling will have flattened out in surgery, but the swelling due to surgery takes 2 weeks to settle.
Patients are reviewed at 10 days following surgery when the wounds are checked and stitches removed.

How do we do Ganglion Excision surgery?
Patients can typically have Ganglion Excision Surgery performed and go home the same day.
Patients have the procedure under local anaesthetic.
An incision is made near or directly above the swelling. This allows for the ganglion capsule to be tracked to the joint, where they arise from and freed.
The skin is closed with non-dissolving stitches and the hand dressed to protect the wound, but free enough to use when absolutely needed.
What kind of patients would benefit from Ganglion Excision Surgery?
Patients with swellings (ganglion) in the hand, typically the back of the wrist.
There may be associated discomfort with it but typically, there are no problems with the hand despite the swelling.
Some patients may get nerve pain if the swellings are directly under a nerve, but this tends to be a problem.
What do we do before Ganglion Excision surgery?
When patients come in to the clinic, our UK-trained plastic surgeon makes a full assessment of the patient.
This includes any relevant history, including reasons for surgery and a thorough examination including both hands.
Part of this process is explaining to the patients what can be done, why, and what to expect, based on each patients’ anatomy and suitability for surgery.
What do patients notice after Ganglion Excision Surgery?
The swelling will have been removed as a result of surgery, so the area will be flatter than before.
However, there will be a degree of swelling due to the operation and the local anaesthetic injection which will settle.
Immediately after surgery, each patient is seen by the senior physiotherapist who specialises in hand surgery, where the patients are given advice for what to look out for, what to expect and what can be done including exercise to help with rehabilitation.
Patients can contact their team if they have any questions. Patients are seen 10 days after surgery when the wounds are checked and stitches removed.
The same physiotherapist will go through the exercises to help with rehabilitation after surgery.
What are the alternatives to Ganglion Excision Surgery?
Some patients may have used a big book to knock out the fluid.
Other methods that may have been used including the use of steroids injections or aspiration, where the fluid is drawn out. Alternatives include using ultrasound to create multiple holes.
However, these methods tend to have quite a high recurrence rate, meaning the swelling can come back.
